Mattress – Some Great Tips to Buy It

Sadly over the years some retailers have used questionable practices to sell mattresses thus making consumers just a tad bit gun shy. Therefore it's really smart to make sure you know how to buy a mattress. Learn to understand mattress jargon and selling techniques.

1. Firmness - You should always check a mattress for comfort before purchasing. Each person requires a different level of firmness and you need to ensure you purchase the correct firmness to support your body.

2. Construction - Know how the mattress is constructed. The more expensive mattresses have thicker padding, damask ticking, and higher coil counts. They also have a nice cushion sewn onto the mattress. Higher coil counts reduce the amount of sagging.

3. Construction Types - There are many types of construction. An innerspring mattress has coiled metal springs that are layered between padded sheets. Other types include futons, waterbeds, feather beds, and foam mattresses.

4. Size - There are five different sizes to choose from: A twin is 39 x 75 inches, a double is 53 x 75 inches, a queen is 60 x 80 inches, and a king is 78 x 80 inches. Choose a size that fits your room. Go as big as you can because bigger means more room to move around and more comfort.

5. Softness - Your mattress should be well padded and soft at all the contact points along the body, otherwise you will wake up stiff and sore.

6. Support - Your mattress needs to be form enough to keep your body aligned while you sleep

7. Appearance - Look at the overall appearance of the mattress. Check the color, the quality, and how thick the padding is.

8. Under the Padding - Now your mattress might look great on the outside but it's really what's in-between that's important. The Ticking is usually made of a polyester cotton blend. And a good mattress will have a quilted top padding. The more expensive the thicker the padding.

The middle padding is generally egg carton foam and the insulated padding lies directly on the top of the springs so that you don't feel them. After all there's nothing worse than getting poked and prodded by springs.

The number of coils can be as low as 300 in a cheap mattress to 400 or more in a more expensive mattress. How the coils are placed is as important as the number of coils.

The box spring provides extra comfort and softness. It might be just a wood frame with springs or a metal frame with springs. It's always good to buy mattress and box spring as a set because they are engineered to provide optimum comfort as a set.

9. Where to Buy - Department stores, chain stores, stores that specialize in mattress are all choices that allow you to test a mattress but your going to spend a great deal of time going from store to store.

The internet offers some excellent sites and pricing. In fact you can save as much as 40% perhaps even more. Trouble is you can't try before you buy which is very important.

The solution is to do your leg work at the brick and mortar stores and find the mattress that's best for you and then to find it online.

Marketing Tactics - There are many questionable tactics used in the mattress industry and it pays to be aware of them. Bait and switch isn't just on mattresses. This is a tactic where a company advertises a lower priced item that they don't have and then try to sell you a more expensive item.

Fine print is another thing to watch out for. Some stores offer great prices but when you read the fine print you discover you have to pay additional fees for delivery, covers, or all kinds of other regions. So make sure you compare carefully and read the small print.

Confusing terminology is another problem that can occur. Each company tends to have their own terms for fabrics and construction which can make it difficult to compare products.

That's it. Now you know everything you need to know about how to buy a mattress.
